Guilty of not going to work because of the snow. There was nearly a foot of the fluffy white stuff. I managed to get out of the warmish flat to move some of the snow from around the car and path. I did use some of it to make a big snowball, there is still enough left in our yard to make at least 4 more but I don't have the energy.

So I am home again after seeing nearly ALL of my VAST family this holiday season - the Rogers, the Dunns, the Butlers, the Plants, even the Greens, who are my mother's cousins and who I only met a few years ago. And although Christmas was tainted by the imminent death of my grandfather (he died on January 2nd, in his sleep, with dementia and pneumonia), and we were mainly there to distract my grandmother and keep my younger cousins happy, it was a relatively cheerful Christmas with the Rogers and Dunns, overall.
The Butler New Year was a little more tense, given that a large proportion of my father's family is a LOT LIKE ME. That is, thoughtful, unsociable, inclined to get absorbed in their own projects and not very tolerant of other people in their personal space. Added to which, my other cousins are showing signs of inheriting this strain, which at the age they are at makes them stroppy and loud. Everybody was pleased to see everyone else, but we were all glad when it was over.
And now I am back. I have been fed like a sacrificial goose - the tendency of Southern women to want to feed people is phenomenal, but somehow I have not put on any weight. This isn't altogether surprising, I've remained much the same weight since I was fifteen, except when I was seriously ill.
And now I've got home, I've had a seizure. It couldn't have been a big one because my memory seems to be mostly intact - not that I've tried to RP with it yet - but I bit my tongue and dinged my chin on the chest at the end of my bed. COuld've been worse, though, and I've been waiting for this shoe to drop for a while.
The ironic thing is that I just had a fall monitor put in and the first time I have a fit, I was getting dressed and not wearing the damn thing...

Well, holiday is nearly over. I haven't achieved an enourmous amount.
I've finally sorted the house out after my unexpected boiler replacement,
I have made two tunics, and 10 different designs of Larp dagger sheaths for my two actual daggers :P.

All of which add up to about two solid days of work. Ho hum.

What i have failed to do is: find out exactly why the front-room side lights are suddenly causing circuit breakers to go. (I've just disconnected them for the moment), figure out where the old Central heating was powered from, Sort out the Conservetory, loose a stone, and repair my speccy 48 (Again!)
Now admittedly, i have actually made an attempt at some of this stuff, but not got very far.

Ah well. Perhaps next year.

In the mean time, i have read the rest of the Lost fleet books, except of course the one that hasnt been released yet. I think their my new favorates.

I've also completed Freelancer again. Currently pottering about Liberty space in the hardest ship in the game, loaded up with Nomad weaponary. Basically means the Pirates in Liberty space cant actually get through my shields.

Edit: And as it seems traditional to comment about it at the moment, My considered opinion is that the last Dr Who was a bit poo.

The End Of Time Jan. 1st, 2010 @ 11:54 pm

My thoughts on Mr David Tennant's final trip in the TARDIS can be found on Twitter (#theEndOfTime, in case I can be bothered working out how to link to a single Twitter account's hashtag stream). Fundamentally: Decent, but massively self-indulgent at the end. The last 20 minutes literally does nothing but celebrate RTD's tenure as script editor.

And what happened to that plot about the Ood developing too quickly? Where did that go?

Well, Christmas in the US is certainly different than in the UK. No boxing day for a start. The day after Christmas Day is just December the 26th, just another day in the year. Christmas meals are odd too, there is no tradition here of a Christmas meal, just a nice meal that you have on the 25th. Their equivalent of the Christmas meal is the Thanksgiving meal. In a way what a British person would consider Christmas is Thanksgiving and American Christmas combined.

Here is Carl Sagan

[1] The roads here are awful. Most have no curb, and even the main roads are not properly finished to a European standard – just gravel over concrete. Americans seem to HATE paying taxes and would rather pay 25% of their wages to a health care company than pay 5% to get universal health care. The roads, they pay out about $100 a year per car to repair chips in windscreens rather than pay $50 a year per car to properly surface the roads. As much as we British complain about our crumbling infrastructure at least we have one.
[2] American stores tend to be both very big, and very far away.
[3] Oh sure, if you want a Raspberry and Vanilla Chai or Herbal No Caffine Peppermint and Bannana drink it is fine, but getting a drink of tea that actually contains tea is impossible. If you are lucky enough to actually find a place that serves tea they bring you a cup of hot water, a selection of tea bags on strings, and some condiments (usually not including milk, sugar, or lemon). The concept of boil-water/add-tea-bag/brew/remove-tea-bag/add-milk-and-sugar seems alien to them. It is like asking for a chicken sandwich and getting some dough and an egg.

...for the entire Slayer discography, and that is on Christmas Eve when your boss is being a twat. We successfully drowned out the annoying tinkly music with a lot of very loud metal and registered our protest on the situation.

Christmas itself was lovely. Spent the vast majority of it at Adam's parents house with his family, whilst being ever so slightly tipsy. We were bought a lot of booze by various in-laws. Got a mighty haul of presents and enough money to get Token his new viv when he's big enough for it (not far off, now. Can't believe how much he's grown! He's almost 20 inches long now). Adam's parents also gave me knives. I feel there may be a message in there somewhere. We also had a day of just chilling out together, something we don't do nearly enough, before I had to go back to work. Boo!

Work itself is being a bit shit. My boss is being a complete jobsworth prick who is winding me up at every turn with his twattishness. The work itself is fine, and I can do it without issue as long as the fucker leaves me alone. But anyway, enough of that...

Today is mine and Adam's 5th anniversary. This is really quite a terrifying thought. To celebrate we're having a takeaway and chilling with a film. Not very exciting, but I'm knackered.

Only 1 more day of 2009 to go. Roll on 2010. Don't be shit.

During tidying today, i found the battery for my old phone. (the reason i got a new one was because it fell out and I couldnt find it) Yeey!

Much prefer my old one!, it doesnt have Internet or Bluetooth, but it did have an FM radio and a camera which i can easilly transfer pictures with, which i find far more useful.

I am currently watching Airplane! The fact that i'm also currently posting on Livejournal may give you a clue as to how interesting i'm finding it:-)

I have sorted out the collection of music a friend of mine gave me. Now i just have to learn how to read it. There are loads of classics in there. Will definately have to learn God save the Queen, as its good in any company :P

I dislike christmas. There are three aspects to it for me, The religious festival, which i dont care about, the Merchendising opportunity, which i really hate, and the extra couple of days off at the end of the year, which i dont mind so much.

So meh. This Christmas has mostly been quality time with the cats, which goes down well, and attacking my collection of bits of leather to make stuff, of which i have enough dagger sheaths of various types to equip a small army. Will probably chuck a few of them into SOS monster kit. Bored with that now, so some tidying up may be in the near future.

Got a replacement MP3 player cos my old one was starting to mess up. I suspect I laundered it one time too many. Have also done the yearly loft sort out. There are now loads of boxes and other rubbish in the back of the car awaiting tomorrow.

Anyway, bath awaits (The Fibreglass insulation gets everywere)

And I'm glad I was. See, yesterday I was whining about not getting down South for Christmas. now it is Christmas Eve and here I am in Devon with my mum, her mum, her twin sisters, my cousins, my uncle and my brother. I'm going to spend New Year in Dorset with my dad, stepmum, sister, dad's mum and at least one of the collection of aunts and uncles from that side of the family.
Grandma has aquired a cat that she has christened 'Woffles' - everyone else calls her 'Fang-ang-ang-ang' due to her tendency to attack people's ankles and climb curtains. I threw her at the living room curtains and she stuck.
I have also made two dolls specially so I can make a couple of Toy Society drops while I'm at this end of the country. I am proud of both.
Happy Christmas, y'all!

Review: Aspall's Perronelle's Blush Suffolk Cyder Dec. 24th, 2009 @ 07:48 pm
[info]anne_l_davies
http://dev.aspall.co.uk/products/cyder/perronelles_blush-3-6-26.html

Blimey this is pink! It's cYder (note the "y") with "a dash" of blackberry liqueur. This makes it 5.4%ABV or 2.7 UK Units according to the information on the back of the label.

I do not like a cider (or cyder) which os too sweet, and this avoids that problem. I have been sipping it for much of this afternoon, as I do not think it is suited to being a quaffing drink. It is pleasantly bubbly, and retains it's smoothness to the bottom of the glass. You also get 500ml in a bottle, so it is good for a relaxed session when you don't want to be going to the bar/your fridge too often.

At this festive time of year, it is a little different to your usual dodgy lager or plonk, and due to it's colour (did I mention the extreme pinkness?) it is probably acceptable to drink from a delicate glass if you are having to spend the impending days with judgemental relatives!

Recommended.

Review: Dragon's Den - You Road to Success Dec. 24th, 2009 @ 07:31 pm

My quest to read every conceivable business book continues....

This is one of those "Quick Reads" things, that they bring out for World Book Day. It is therefore cheap. And short. And in big type.

It is sort of like a prequel for the books which have actually been "written" by each of the Dragons - sort of like a tasting menu - if you find one you like, you can buy their actual book and discover more on their particular business philosophy.

This is not a bad book, but it isn't going to launch you into being an entrepreneurial superstar either. If you've been thinking about going it alone in the world of business, it might spur you on, but there's not the sort of useful info that you get in other introductory level business books. It's almost like a collection of interviews from a Sunday newspaper.

Still, as I say, not bad, and potentially useful guidance for the unemployed twenty-something in your life. And it really is a quick read - well under 2 hours for me, and my reading speed has slowed down somewhat!

So, worth sticking in the bottom of a stocking, or for a week's worth of commute, but make it your first business book, or you won't find a great deal of use in the content.

Merry Christmas cos you owe us money! What?? Really?? Dec. 24th, 2009 @ 02:34 pm

Yes, really!!

So I'm currently being diddled out of £64 from my previous flat in water charges (despite the fact that I remember making 2 payments, before jobs went to the dogs, of £28). I'm pretty sure that my flate rate for the flat was about £200 and the same goes for my current property.

Before this fiasco, my bill was consolidated to £343 and I was told that I'd be put onto a payments scheme because I was on JSA. It would be taken out on the 29th of each month. So I didn't need to do anything, just sit back and everything will be fine....HA! Yeah right.

So after bouncing back and forth between UU [United Utilities] and their debt recovery people I was told that the consolidation was false, the JSA scheme HADN'T been sorted AT ALL, the computer is always right and I was an insignificant worm.

SHODAN??? You have SHODAN running your systems?? ahh shit.

ooooh hang on, I've found a letter with the words

AMENDED WATER BILL

hhhhmmmm, I wonder why I have one of those?

Oh wait, maybe it was because...
...
...
I CONSOLIDATED BOTH OF MY BILLS!!!!!!

So, apparently they have Holly instead.

Wonderful.
